Al Reese, Beacon’s President and Shelter Manager, says all the time that Beacon’s greatest asset is our dedicated volunteers. One of the best, and most mutually enjoyable, ways to make a difference in the lives of homeless dogs in our community is to participate in Beacon’s Dog Walking Program. The shelter can be a noisy and stressful place for dogs who have been lost or given up by their owners, and interaction with people is their best therapy. The Dog Walking Program provides our dogs this essential quality time with people who truly care about them.
Though we provide all of our residents with the best possible temporary home while they wait for their Forever Homes, the sad truth is that all dogs in animal shelters are confined to cages the majority of the time. The isolation and restricted activity can cause health and behavior problems that affect the dogs’ quality of life and chances for adoption. Volunteer dog walkers (and joggers!) provide the daily exercise, affection and socialization that confined dogs need to stay healthy and happy, so that they can one day go home to a families that will care for them in ways their original owners did not.
If you are an animal lover interested in brightening the day of a lonely dog - and if you need maximum flexibility with your volunteering - walking our dogs may be for you! This program is also a great opportunity for people who cannot adopt dogs themselves to have some meaningful interaction with our wonderful residents. And remember, physical health is important for everyone - dogs and people alike. Becoming a member of our Dog Walking Program is a great way to be physically active, while bringing joy to the lives of those who need it most.
